How to Compare Card Counting Systems

If you are new to card counting then one of the first things you need to decide is which card counting system you will use. There are a large number of card counting methods, from Level 1 beginning methods to more advanced Level 2 and Level 3 card counting systems. Read on to learn about the factors that you should take into consideration when comparing card counting systems and deciding which one is right for you.

The effectiveness of card counting methods is dependant on a variety of factors. For starters, it is important to take into consideration whether you are a beginner or more advanced card counter. If you are brand new to counting cards then you should start with an easy Level 1 system, such as the Hi-Lo card counting method, which is a balanced system that assigns values of -1, 0 and +1 to all cards in the deck. This is an effective system for all blackjack games and though it is not quite as accurate or effective as some of the more advanced methods, it may be too difficult to keep an accurate count using more advanced methods when you are just starting out.

When comparing card counting systems you should also take into account the factor of balances versus unbalanced systems. In a balanced card counting system, when you count an entire deck you should end with a count of 0. This makes it easy to remember that all positive value counts mean there are more high-value cards in the deck and all negative value counts mean that there are more low value cards in the deck. In unbalanced card counting, when an entire deck is counted down the count exceeds 0. Unbalanced card counting methods are generally easier to keep track of. However, balanced card counting methods are more precise.

When comparing card counting systems you will also notice that some systems give a value to Aces while others assign a value of 0 to Aces. Using a system that assigns a negative value to Aces is much more effective when you play multi-deck games. However, if you are playing a single-deck game then you will find that keeping track of the number of Aces that have been dealt on the side is more effective than including Aces in the count. Keeping a side count of Aces gets more difficult as more decks are added to the game and, therefore, methods that account for Aces are more effective for multi-deck games.

Take these factors into account when comparing card counting methods and you can find the method that is best for you and the blackjack game that you enjoy playing most.
