Red 7: Red Seven
Red Seven is a very popular blackjack card counting strategy that is fantastic to beginning card counters. It is a Level 1 card counting system that is easy to learn and can greatly improve your chances of winning at blackjack and greatly decrease the house edge when you play casino blackjack.
Like the card counting method of Knock Out Blackjack, Red 7 is an unbalanced system. This means that when you count down an entire deck you will end on a value of +2, rather than 0. Therefore, many Red 7 counters choose to begin the count in a 1-deck game on -2 in order to even out the field. This way, a positive count will signify a deck with more high cards than low cards, while a negative count will mean there are more low cards in the deck and the house has the advantage. If you are playing a multi-deck blackjack game then simply multiply the number of decks by -2 to determine the starting count number. In 5-deck game, for instance, you should begin the count with -10.
Before you can start counting, you need to memorize the values assigned to each card in a deck in the Red Seven count. Red Seven assigns 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s and red 7s a count of +1. 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces are assigned a value of -1. 8s, 9s and black 7s are assigned a value of 0. The fact that Black 7s are worth 0 and Red 7s are worth +1 is what gives this card counting method, Red 7, its name.
As with all card-counting systems, if your count is a positive number then this means you have an advantage with more high cards in the deck and if the count is negative this means the house has the advantage with more low cards in the deck. Adjust your bet accordingly. Like Hi-Lo Card Counting and Knock Out Blackjack, Red Seven is a great method for blackjack players that are new to card counting. As you become better you can move on to more advanced methods such as Wong Halves and the Omega II card counting system.
