Up and Down Betting System
Though card counting is not illegal, it is certainly frowned upon by many casinos and it is not unheard of for casinos to ask suspected card counters to leave the table. Many blackjack card counters give themselves away by their betting patterns-they bet big when the count is high and bet the minimum when the count is low. This betting technique can be picked up by casinos in a flash. Fortunately, the up and down betting system can help you to camouflage your card counting.
There are several up and down betting systems. Some are better than others. In the first, a player places a minimum bet in the first game, when the first card of a new deck is coming off the shoe. Then, as the count increases the player gradually increases the bet. The problem with this is that raising your bet too high will catch the attention of the casino. For instance, if you come off the shoe with a $5 bet and then increase to a $100 bet when the count is high, this is a red flag, tipping off your card counting to the casino.
However, by coming off the shoe with a midsized bet, say $25, you then have the room to reduce and increase your bet much more. You can lower your bet to $5 as the count decreases and increase your bet to $50 or higher as the count increases and, because you started out with a $25 bet you will draw a lot less attention with this method. This up and down betting system is used effectively by many card counters and can certainly help you to make the most of your casino blackjack card counting.
